Exporting Data from a InfoPath Form

Is there any way to get around the 256 column limitation on the export
of InfoPath Form data to an Excel file, or will I need to export to a
db?

When exporting data from an InfoPath form, can you set up and save
templates for the specific fields to be exported? It is a pain to
have to select the fields you want using the export wizard since the
export feature exports all fields in the form.

I am personally haven't used the export feature enough to be of assistance here. Though I would assume that if there is a strict 256 column limitation that one way to work around it, although it may be a lame workaround, is to export several times with different sets of data each time, then combine them in Excel. Exporting to a DB may work, but again, I'm won't be of any help there.

Microsoft has published its schema for Excel and other Office apps. It is possible that you could use that schema to create your own Excel file right from within InfoPath. I've never tried this. But in concept it should work.

I don't believe that you can choose which fields to be exported, like you can do for choosing which columns are displayed on SharePoint.

Fields that are populated?

Invert the problem: If you have Excel 2003 with XML support, you can open an
XML file in Excel and set up an XML map. You may be able to only import one
file at a time this way, but you should be able to save the mapping.
